The "Hong Kong Vehicles Northbound" policy has transformed cross-boundary mobility since its July 2023 launch, with over 283,000 Hong Kong private car trips recorded through the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Official data shows 108,000 vehicles and 129,000 drivers have registered under the scheme, with 2025 crossings already exceeding 1 million, hitting the milestone 72 days faster than last year.

Weekend traffic regularly sees 8,600 Hong Kong single-plate vehicles daily, comprising 40% of the total passenger flow. The policy's success was highlighted on May 4 when a record 15,000 northbound crossings occurred during the Labor Day holiday. Hong Kong resident Mr. Lai exemplifies the trend, having made 30+ trips in his mainland-made EV to destinations like Zhongshan and Guangzhou since late 2023. "The convenience and affordability make weekly family trips worthwhile," he says, noting the appeal of rural dining and seasonal activities like lychee picking.

It has become a trend for Hong Kong and Macao residents to travel by car for sightseeing and leisure consumption. The picture shows Hong Kong and Macao vehicles parked next to the Zhuhai Seafood Market. (DDN)

The policy has spurred economic activity beyond tourism. Zhuhai appliance stores report a 200% increase in Hong Kong customers taking advantage of mainland subsidy programs. Border authorities note daily crossings have jumped from 7,000 pre-policy to 18,000 currently, with peak days exceeding 28,000 vehicles. Overall bridge traffic in 2025 shows 15.1 million passenger movements (up 20% YoY) and 3.23 million vehicle crossings (up 30% YoY), signaling the rapid development of a seamless Greater Bay Area living zone where Hong Kong residents increasingly work, shop, and settle.

With infrastructure upgrades, including AI-assisted customs clearance, underway, the policy continues to reshape regional connectivity as more Hong Kong residents transition from frequent visitors to permanent participants in the mainland economy.
