The inaugural "Extravaganza! When Brazil Meets Hong Kong," organized by Extravaganza, officially opened today (June 27) with a grand ceremony at AIA Vitality Park in Central. Over the next three days, the carnival will be open to the public free of charge, featuring nearly 20 live performances by around 50 Brazilian performers. Attendees can look forward to vibrant samba dances, dynamic reggae drumming, and thrilling displays of capoeira, a traditional Brazilian martial art.
Visitors will also have the chance to indulge in authentic Brazilian delicacies and beverages, with five food stalls offering items such as Brazilian cheese bread, coconut pudding tarts, and signature Brazilian cocktails. A 2.3-meter-tall cocktail tower will be a standout feature, allowing guests to sip on drinks while enjoying the lively performances.

Stefan Matzinger, founder of the carnival, shared that the idea for the event was inspired by his personal experience at Brazil's iconic carnival last year. He said that he loves both HK and Brazil deeply, and he hopes HK can experience the same energy. He expressed his gratitude to the HKSAR government for supporting the event and highlighted the inclusive nature of the carnival, where "bankers and waiters cheer side by side in harmony."

HK Financial Secretary Paul Chan also expressed his appreciation for Matzinger's efforts to bring this world-renowned celebration to the city. Chan emphasized the government's commitment to enhancing HK's status as a hub for international events. He noted that with the upcoming Kai Tak Sports Park, the city will host an array of global events, including concerts, rugby matches, and visits from top football teams, with hopes of welcoming the Brazilian national football team in the near future.

Hervelter de Mattos, Brazil's Deputy Consul General in HK, underscored the cultural significance of the event, describing it as a bridge for cultural exchange between HK and Brazil. He pledged full support for the carnival, which he believes will provide a broader platform for Brazil's exceptional samba performers.

Featured performers at the carnival include samba drumming queen Andressa Marinho, soul singer Thulla Melo, world-class DJ Jose Hesse, and freestyle football world champion Ricardinho. The event promises an immersive cultural experience with music, dance, and authentic Brazilian cuisine, offering a taste of Brazil right in the heart of HK.
