Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee reiterated the government's dual focus on national security and economic development following a visit by Xia Baolong, the Director of the Central Government's Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office. The discussions came during events marking the fifth anniversary of the Hong Kong National Security Law's implementation.
Xia emphasized five core principles for Hong Kong's governance: maintaining national security under "one country, two systems," ensuring patriotic governance, balancing security with development, protecting residents' rights, and preserving Hong Kong's unique advantages. Chief Executive Lee welcomed Xia's guidance, particularly his warning against forgetting the lessons of 2019's social unrest.
The Hong Kong leader outlined four key priorities:
- Fully implementing "one country, two systems" with a national security focus
- Leveraging Hong Kong's legal strengths and international connections
- Deeper integration into national development strategies
- Enhancing innovation in finance, trade, and technology
Lee highlighted major projects like the Northern Metropolis development as evidence of Hong Kong's growth trajectory. The government will also accelerate the development of the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park, and promote the overall development of Hong Kong with industrial development as the main axis and innovation and technology as the core.
