
The Densuke Watermelon, a specialty of Toma Town in Hokkaido, Japan, recently held its first auction of the season, with the highest bid reaching 700,000 yen, equivalent to nearly HK$38,000. The highest price ever recorded for a Densuke Watermelon was 750,000 yen (approximately HK$40,298) in 2019.
According to Japanese media reports, the auction took place on June 20 at wholesale markets in Sapporo and Asahikawa, drawing a large number of interested consumers. The highest bid of 700,000 yen was achieved in Asahikawa, matching last year's price at the same time.
The buyer of the highest bid was ARCS, a supermarket in Asahikawa, which announced that it will hold tasting events in-store, inviting the public to come and sample the watermelon.
The Densuke Watermelon, also known as the black-skinned watermelon, is renowned for its black or dark green smooth skin and distinctive sweetness. The annual production is limited to around 100 watermelons. In addition to being eaten fresh, Densuke Watermelons are also used to make candied products or processed into watermelon jam.
