A small plane crashed onto the frozen surface of Tustumena Lake in Alaska's Kenai Peninsula on the night of March 23, leaving the pilot and his two daughters stranded in the icy wilderness. Miraculously, the trio survived the crash and endured the freezing night on the plane's wing before being rescued the following morning.
According to Alaska's News Source, 38-year-old John Morris, a frequent pilot who often shared photos of flying with his daughters on social media, was piloting the plane when it vanished from radar and failed to arrive at its scheduled destination. The wreckage was later spotted on the frozen lake during a search operation.
A search pilot described his initial shock upon seeing the wreckage: "It kind of broke my heart to see that, but as I got closer down and lower, I could see that there's three people on top of the wing. They were alive and responsive and moving around."
On March 24, members of the Alaska Army National Guard successfully rescued Morris and his two daughters using a helicopter, transporting them to a medical facility on the Kenai Peninsula for treatment.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Dennis Hogenson, a regional official for the US National Transportation Safety Board, described the family's survival and rescue as "very good news."
