The adorable and "scruffy" appearance, along with the lively and playful personality of the little bear Jun Jun at Shanghai Zoo, has attracted the attention of countless visitors and netizens. Recently, our reporters visited Shanghai Zoo and met "scruffy bear" Jun Jun. According to staff at Shanghai Zoo, Jun Jun is now one year old and gradually growing taller and stronger, but his playful nature remains unchanged—he is as active as ever.
On January 4, 2024, Shanghai Zoo's brown bear family welcomed an adorable new member—Jun Jun. Shortly after birth, Jun Jun was covered in fluffy gray fur, with little eyes that melted hearts. Since Jun Jun's mother lacked experience in raising cubs, the zookeepers took on the responsibility of caring for him after his birth. Under their attentive care, Jun Jun thrived, his fur gradually turning light brown, growing into the adorable likeness of his parents, though his coat remained slightly "scruffy," earning him the nickname "scruffy bear" from fans.
Jun Jun is full of vitality during the day, especially fond of playing with the toy tires provided by the zoo. To enrich the exhibit's environmental enrichment and increase his exercise, the keepers installed a custom-made tire swing in the enclosure, designed to match Jun Jun's height. Sometimes, the keepers hide some of Jun Jun's favorite treats inside the tire. To get to the food, Jun Jun must first sniff carefully to locate it, then engage in a "battle" with the swinging tire, occasionally even unleashing his roar in frustration. One keeper explained that this not only tests Jun Jun's mental and physical abilities but also simulates the process of foraging in the wild while keeping him active.
Beyond toys and activities, a balanced diet is key to Jun Jun's healthy growth. The zoo's "animal kitchen" provides him with carefully prepared meals to ensure proper nutrition. Additionally, a daily routine since his cubhood—"morning runs"—has played a significant role. The keepers take Jun Jun for a jog every morning, which not only strengthens his physique but also deepens the bond and trust between him and his caretakers. As Jun Jun grows day by day, more and more adorable moments are being discovered. The keepers say, "We hope to work together with everyone to nurture Jun Jun's healthy growth."
