The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) launched a large-scale operation in Los Angeles targeting undocumented immigrants, sparking widespread outrage among local residents and triggering large-scale riots. On June 7, President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 California National Guard troops to the Los Angeles area, with the first group of 300 arriving downtown on the 8th.

By midday, clashes between protesters and military police escalated dramatically. The number of protesters, initially in the dozens, swelled to thousands near and around the federal detention center holding undocumented immigrants.

On the evening of the 10th, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced a curfew for parts of downtown Los Angeles during a press conference. In light of the intense clashes between protesters and law enforcement, as well as widespread destruction and looting occurring late at night and in the early hours, the curfew would take effect at 8 p.m. that evening and last until 6 a.m. on the 11th (Wednesday). The curfew applies to a 1-square-mile area (1.6 km by 1.6 km) in the downtown district.
