Nintendo's new generation gaming console, Switch 2, officially launched on June 5 in Japan, the United States, and Hong Kong, marking the company's first new console release in eight years. This sparked a buying frenzy, with long queues forming in various locations.
According to Reuters, due to the high demand for next-generation consoles with more powerful performance, the product is expected to be in short supply. In Japan, the Switch 2 is being sold through a lottery system. Nintendo President Furukawa Shuntaro revealed in April that up to 2.2 million people entered the lottery for the first day of sales, far exceeding the company's expectations and surpassing the initial supply, indicating that supply constraints may continue. The upcoming external director at Nintendo also noted on June 3 that he was not selected in the lottery.
The Switch 2 is very similar to its predecessor but features a larger screen and more advanced graphics capabilities. Nintendo projected last month that the sales volume for Switch 2 in this fiscal year will be 15 million units, while the original Switch is expected to sell 4.5 million units. The company stated that its My Nintendo Store in Japan received 2.2 million applications for the Switch 2 sales lottery.
The upcoming external director also posted on the social media platform X, stating he is also not selected, indicating he did not win the chance to purchase. He also shared the news that voice actor Yuichi Nakamura, who narrates Nintendo's presentations, was also not selected for the third time, prompting netizens to comment on the fairness of the lottery selection process.
