Elon Musk has triggered political turmoil after launching scathing attacks against a Republican-backed tax-cut bill, drawing sharp rebukes from House Speaker Mike Johnson and revealing President Donald Trump's displeasure. Johnson disclosed on June 4 that Trump was "not happy" with Musk's abrupt reversal on the legislation, which the entrepreneur previously supported.

Musk escalated his criticism over two consecutive days, first denouncing the bill as "disgusting" on June 3, then urging Americans on June 4 to pressure legislators to "kill" the proposal, declaring: "Bankrupting America is wrong." Johnson immediately pushed back, stating "I think he's completely wrong," and revealed he unsuccessfully attempted to call Musk for discussions.

The White House dismissed Musk's stance, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt asserting on June 3: The president is aware of Mr. Musk's position... It doesn't change his mind. This is a big, beautiful bill, and he's going to stick with it.

The controversial US$4 trillion tax-cut package narrowly passed the House (217-215) on May 22. The legislation proposes sweeping tax reductions over the next decade alongside US$1.5 trillion in spending cuts. Critics warn it could devastate social programs and balloon federal debt. The bill now faces an uncertain future in the Senate amid Musk's high-profile opposition.
