On May 29, Harvard University held its graduation ceremony. Three graduate speakers emphasized the need to keep the student body diverse and international. One of the speakers, Jiang Yurong from Qingdao, Shandong Province, China, said she grew up believing that the world was becoming a small village and found a global community at Harvard, but she worries that this worldview is increasingly under threat.
Jiang chose to pursue a master's degree in public administration for international development at Harvard's Kennedy School, joining a class of 77 students from 34 countries. "When I met my 77 classmates from 32 different countries, the countries I knew only as colorful shapes on a map turned into real people with laughter, dreams, and the perseverance to survive the long winter in Cambridge," she said.
In her speech, Jiang encouraged people to listen to each other without judgment and to seek common beliefs rather than conflict. "If we still believe in a shared future, let's not forget: those we label as enemies, they too, are human," she said.
