At the Thai Rice Convention 2025, Pol Lt. Charoen Laothamatas, President of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, reflected on the enduring partnership between Thailand and Hong Kong, one of the most important markets for Thai Hom Mali rice.
He shared that Hong Kong once accounted for as much as 90% of Thailand's jasmine rice exports, and played a key role in the evolution of packaging trends — from bulk sacks to the now-standard 5kg household bags. Even during the most difficult days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Thailand arranged a bulk shipment of 20,000 tons of rice to ensure Hong Kong's supply, reaffirming that "Hong Kong is always our priority."
"Whenever there's a shortage, we find a way. Hong Kong comes first."
This interview highlights not just a trade relationship, but a legacy of trust, resilience, and shared responsibility between Thailand and Hong Kong.
