A military parade to honor the 250th anniversary of the US Army will take place on June 14 in the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. Coincidentally, the date marks US President Donald Trump's 79th birthday, prompting criticism from Democrats and opponents who argue the event doubles as a personal celebration for the president.
According to planning documents obtained by USA Today, the parade will showcase tanks, military aircraft, and other hardware on the National Mall, with an estimated cost of US$30 million—a figure that could rise. More than 7,000 soldiers are expected to participate, with many housed in government buildings throughout Washington.
Reports indicate that soldiers and equipment will arrive in Washington a few days before the parade. The event will involve 120 military vehicles, including 24 Abrams tanks and howitzers. President Trump is expected to watch from a viewing stand near Constitution Avenue, close to the White House. The parade will conclude with a fireworks display at dusk.
