Brazil's President Lula said on May 14 that Brazil is not afraid of any form of retaliation, nor worried about the attitude of the United States, and that he will always be committed to strengthening relations with China and other countries and multilateral organizations. Lula is on a state visit to China, where he has signed more than 30 cooperation agreements.
Speaking at a press conference, Lula said, as reported by Global Times and Bloomberg, "The Beijing declaration is a sign of hope that an economic powerhouse like China is thinking about how it can contribute to the development of the world's poorest countries. He also said the world is a different place now, where there is no need for "bosses" or "policemen of the world", but rather for equal partnerships.
This is Lula's sixth visit to China and the second since 2023. According to experts, Lula's visit signifies a closer relationship between China and Brazil.
Lula also said that Brazil shares China's position on defending multilateralism and opposing trade protectionism, and hopes that Chinese investment and support will help Brazil climb up the global value chain.
Asked whether Brazil is worried about retaliation from the Trump administration for getting closer to China, Lula said that as a big country, Brazil has its own sovereign principles and positions. He hoped the U.S. will understand Brazil's position and that the Trump administration will not forget the huge U.S. trade surplus with Brazil.
At the Great Hall of the People, the two heads of China and Brazil witnessed the signing of 20 cooperation documents covering the fields of development strategy alignment, science and technology, agriculture, digital economy, finance, inspection and quarantine, and media.
