Tram fares will increase today (May 12) to HK$3.3 for adults, HK$1.6 for children aged 3 to 11, and HK$1.5 for senior citizens aged 65 or above. The monthly ticket, which costs HK$260, will remain unchanged.
The Chief Executive in Council agreed on May 8 of last month that the Hong Kong Tramways Limited should revise its fares. The authorities pointed out that after careful consideration of various factors in accordance with the established policy and mechanism, the authorities considered that it was necessary to adjust tram fares in order to maintain its healthy operation, and that the rate of increase proposed by the tramway company was at an acceptable level. The authorities also pointed out that after the fare increase, the tram remained the most suitable mode of transport for traveling along the northern shore of Hong Kong Island.
