The police received a report yesterday (May 10) from a 31-year-old woman who said she had purchased six tickets for a Mayday concert through an online platform and had arranged for the "seller" to make payment and delivery electronically on Tuesday (May 6). When the victim entered the venue with the tickets on the day before yesterday (May 9), she was told by a staff member that the tickets were invalid before she realized that she had been cheated, and she had lost about HK$14,000. However, the same trick was repeated yesterday when the victim was sold two more tickets for a concert by Jay Chou and was asked to settle the payment at a designated place.
Officers from the Sau Mau Ping District crime unit took over the investigation of the case and deployed an ambush operation. Yesterday, a 19-year-old local woman was arrested at the MTR Kai Tak Station on suspicion of "obtaining property by deception" and seizure of the related false tickets. The arrestee is being detained for investigation.
The police reiterated that any person who commits the offense of "obtaining property by deception" under section 17 of the Theft Ordinance, Chapter 210 of the Hong Kong Legislation, is liable to a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment.
