The Chief Secretary for Administration, Chan Kwok-ki, said that Hong Kong should welcome different types of tourists, and should not be confined to the high-spending segment. He also cited the example that although student visitors do not have high spending power, if they have a good impression of Hong Kong, they may become high-spending visitors when they visit Hong Kong again in the future, and may choose to study in Hong Kong, or even stay in Hong Kong to work after graduation, which can make a great contribution to Hong Kong.
When attending a radio program, Chan also said that there were 1.1 million visitor arrivals during this year's "May Day holiday", a year-on-year increase of 22%, which is much higher than the 10% growth originally expected, and hotel occupancy generally reached 90%, which is a very good result.
Chan said that the inter-departmental working group on holiday arrangements led by him had reviewed public transport services and sightseeing arrangements in advance, and that the increase in minibus frequency at the High Island Reservoir East Dam had resulted in an overall smooth flow of traffic, eliminating the need for tourists to wait in long queues, and that the use of different means of transportation, such as tour buses, would be considered in the future.
He also said that the administration had coordinated with tour groups to arrange for them to spread out their meals and visits to scenic spots at different time slots. In the future, the administration will consider the use of more technology to assist in this regard, and will keep a close watch on social media in the Mainland in order to keep track of which scenic spots tourists like to visit.
As for the 60-kilometer-long Round-the-Island Trail on Hong Kong Island announced in the previous Policy Address, Chan expects that 90% of the trail will be completed within two to three years, which will provide more leisure space for the public and tourists.
