China's Ministry of Commerce announced on Friday (May 2) that it is evaluating recent US proposals to initiate tariff negotiations. This comes after repeated statements from senior US officials expressing hopes to engage with China on trade issues and reach an agreement.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce addressed the matter during a press briefing, stating that China has taken note of the US's high-level remarks and its efforts to convey messages through various channels, signaling an interest in resuming talks. "China is currently conducting an assessment of these developments," the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson emphasized that the trade and tariff disputes were unilaterally initiated by the US. For meaningful dialogue to occur, the US must demonstrate genuine intent by correcting its erroneous measures and preparing to remove unilateral tariffs.
If the US fails to rectify its unilateral tariff policies, it will show a lack of sincerity, further damaging mutual trust, the spokesperson added.
