6 HK universities rank among Asia's top 50 in THE Rankings, HKU holds sixth spot for two years

The Times Higher Education's (THE) "Top 100 universities in Asia 2025" has been released, with six universities from Hong Kong securing spots in the top 50. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) remains the highest-ranked institution in the city, holding the sixth position for the second consecutive year. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) climbed one spot to ninth, while the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) maintained its 12th place. City University of Hong Kong (CityU) dropped slightly to 16th, while the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) rose one spot to 18th. Notably, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) jumped 13 places to 50th, its best performance in recent years.

A total of 853 universities from 35 Asian countries or regions were evaluated this year. The rankings are based on criteria including industry engagement, international outlook, research quality, research environment, and teaching.

HKU maintains sixth place, CUHK in top 10 for eight consecutive years

Ranked sixth, HKU responded to media inquiries by emphasizing its commitment to providing high-quality education, achieving excellence in teaching, research, and knowledge exchange, and further enhancing its international reputation as a leading institution in the region.

CUHK highlighted its consistent presence in Asia's top 10 for the eighth consecutive year, showcasing its excellence in research and education. The university reiterated its dedication to advancing research, education, and innovation, supporting HK's development as an international hub for innovation and higher education while contributing to HK, the country, and the global community.

HKUST expressed its pride in remaining among HK's top three universities in the latest rankings. The university reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing excellence in teaching, research, and industry collaboration, striving to contribute further to society.

CityU scores full marks in industry indicator, tops Asia

CityU noted its position among Asia's top 20 at 16th place, earning full marks in the "industry" indicator, making it the top university in Asia for this category. It also ranked first in HK for "international outlook." President Freddy Boey emphasized the university's progress in teaching and research quality and its efforts to promote internationalized education. CityU has recently been recognized as the most international university in the world by THE, further solidifying HK's position as a hub for higher education in Asia and globally.

HKBU expressed delight in climbing from 105th in 2023 to 50th in 2025, acknowledging the improvement in research quality and environment. The university highlighted its focus on key areas such as creative media, health and drug discovery, humanities and culture, data analytics, and artificial intelligence while expanding interdisciplinary research and driving innovation for societal benefit.
