The Times Higher Education (THE) has released its latest ranking of the world's most reputable universities for 2025, featuring five institutions from Hong Kong. Notably, three of these universities have made it into the top 100, with the University of Hong Kong (HKU) leading the pack at 49th place. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) followed closely, ranking 69th and 97th, respectively.
Tsinghua University continues to hold the top position in Asia, achieving an impressive 8th place globally. The 2025 rankings include a total of 300 universities, with a revised scoring system that incorporates insights from over 55,000 academic experts around the world, providing a more comprehensive assessment of institutional reputation.
Harvard University ranked first overall, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Oxford, which shared the second spot. The top ten list remains dominated by institutions from the United States and the United Kingdom, with Tsinghua University and the University of Tokyo as the only exceptions, positioned at 8th and 10th place, respectively. Peking University closely trails at 11th, underscoring the growing influence of Asian higher education on the global stage.
In Hong Kong, the three universities that made it into the top 100 have shown notable improvement. HKU climbed from the 61-70 range last year to 49th this year, while CUHK advanced from the 91-100 bracket to 69th. HKUST maintained its position at 97th, similar to its previous ranking. Additionally, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the City University of Hong Kong also made the list, ranking between 101-150 and 151-200, respectively.
This year's results reflect the strong academic reputation and global standing of Hong Kong's institutions, highlighting their contributions to higher education and research.
