Chief Executive John Lee stated today (April 20) on social media that he and his team visited Tai O on April 18. In addition to experiencing the local water town charm, they inspected and understood the area's flood prevention preparations ahead of the upcoming rainy season.

Lee mentioned that due to global warming, extreme weather has become increasingly frequent in recent years, and Tai O is one of the areas vulnerable to storms. He noted that the Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, Alice Mak, and the Islands District Officer, Yeung Wai-sum, informed him that the area is actively taking measures to prevent flooding. Through inter-departmental flood drills, they are enhancing the response capabilities of various departments, community organizations, and residents to ensure a swift response to flood risks.

During the visit, Lee also met with elderly residents living in stilt houses, who shared that district councilors, care teams, and community organizations are working together to serve the community. They have called on residents to prepare for storms by elevating furniture and appliances to prevent property loss, and they reminded residents that temporary shelters are available during storms, as well as assistance for post-storm recovery.

Lee expressed his pleasure at hearing residents' recognition of local governance efforts. He highlighted that many care team members, even those with full-time jobs or who are retired, remain dedicated to serving their neighbors and fostering community spirit. He assured residents that the government places great importance on responding to extreme weather, continuously strengthening its capabilities in warning, preparation, emergency response, and recovery to minimize damage and ensure public safety.
In conclusion, Lee reflected that the visit to Tai O was fruitful, allowing him to experience the village's fishing culture and charm. He affirmed that the government will continue to pay attention to local conditions, striving to benefit residents and build a better future, while all departments will work collaboratively to effectively address public needs and build a thriving community.
