The West Kowloon Cultural District (WestK) has partnered with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO) to present "Chinese Tea and Music," an innovative cultural program blending classical melodies with traditional tea artistry.
Set against the backdrop of the Xiqu Centre's Tea House Theatre - a space inspired by historic Chinese teahouses - the event will unfold across two weekends on 26 April and 31 May 2025, inviting audiences to immerse themselves in the refined aesthetics of literati culture through sight, sound, and scent. Tickets are now available on WestK's official website.
A Symphony of Senses
The HKCO will perform iconic Chinese compositions, including A Joyful Evening, May Our Love Be Forever, Leaping Dragon, Three Variations of Yangguan, and Thunder in a Drought, using a silk-string quintet to evoke the dynamic contrasts of Chinese orchestral music. From delicate harmonies to thunderous crescendos, the performances will transport attendees through the emotional depth of these timeless pieces.
The Tea House Theatre's design, echoing traditional teahouses, enhances the immersive experience. Guests will savor premium Chinese teas curated to complement each musical selection, creating a multisensory dialogue between aroma and melody.
Tea Masters and Cultural Guides
The program features insights from tea and music experts, offering audiences a deeper understanding of China's cultural heritage. Lu Yuanyuan, tea master from Lintong Tea (the event's Supporting Partner), will demonstrate traditional brewing techniques, pairing teas such as pu'er and oolong with specific musical works to highlight their shared rhythms and textures.
Dr. Frankie Yeung Wai-shing, Chairman of the Xiqu Centre Advisory Panel and Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, will explore the historical ties between tea culture and Hong Kong's identity. At the same time, Dr. Xu Ran of the HKCO will decode the symbolic connections between tea rituals and musical traditions.
