The European Union may impose retaliatory tariffs on major US tech companies such as Meta and Google if ongoing tariff negotiations with the US fail, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on April 10.
According to the Financial Times, von der Leyen stated that the EU is seeking a "fully balanced" agreement during the 90-day suspension of additional tariffs announced by Donald Trump.
However, she warned that if the negotiations do not yield satisfactory results, the EU is prepared to escalate the transatlantic trade war by targeting the services sector. This could include taxing digital advertising revenues, a move that would directly affect American tech giants.
She criticized Trump's trade policies, describing them as a "complete inflection point in global trade." She further noted, "We will never go back any more to the status quo."
"There are no winners in this, only losers," she said.
