Regarding the visit of American internet celebrity IShowSpeed to Hong Kong last Friday (April 4) for a live stream to experience local culture, Chief Executive John Lee expressed his interest at a press conference today (April 8) and believes that IShowSpeed can help promote Hong Kong.
Lee noted that the Hong Kong Tourism Board had previously been in contact with IShowSpeed and was ready to assist, but the influencer did not subsequently request government support. However, whether it is IShowSpeed or other influencers and citizens visiting Hong Kong, the SAR government will seize the opportunity to promote the city effectively.
Lee continued by stating that promoting Hong Kong is something all citizens would like to do, as a thriving Hong Kong benefits everyone.
"I hope that every Hong Kong citizen can be warm and welcoming, ensuring that visitors feel a positive atmosphere and take the opportunity to promote Hong Kong."
On April 4, IShowSpeed made an appearance in Hong Kong for his live broadcast. He visited several places including the Man Mo Temple and Times Square, personally experienced the local folk custom of "villain hitting", and later went to Ocean Park to see the giant pandas. After a visit to Shenzhen, he returned to Hong Kong, staying at a five-star hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui.
However, multiple accidents appeared after IShowSpeed drew large crowds of young fans along his routine. Some netizens have expressed that such obsessive fandom behavior not only brings no benefits but also damages Hong Kong's image and harms public facilities.
