
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on Monday morning (April 7) that the U.S. policy of "reciprocal tariffs" is akin to a national disaster for Japan, according to a report in the Sankei Shimbun.
Shigeru Ishiba expressed his concern about the U.S. "reciprocal tariffs" again at a House of Councillors meeting, saying, "It can be said that this is a national tragedy for our country," and said he would strive for a reduction through negotiation.
Shigeru Ishiba said he hoped to visit the U.S. as soon as possible and emphasized the need to explain Japan's position to U.S. President Donald Trump.
The Nikkei 225 index fell more than 8 percent in early trading on Monday, dropping below 31,000 points and marking its lowest since October 2023.
