Central Myanmar was recently struck by a devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake, resulting in severe casualties and widespread destruction, with multiple areas declared in a state of emergency. As of April 1, the official death toll stands at 2,056, with over 3,900 injuries reported. However, due to communication disruptions and damaged roads, the actual number of casualties is likely to far exceed official statistics.
Latest images show the heavily affected area of Mandalay in ruins, with streets covered in rubble and remnants of collapsed buildings everywhere. Structures lean precariously or have completely collapsed, turning countless homes into piles of debris. Displaced residents have nowhere to go, sleeping in tents set up along the streets.
In recent days, rescue teams arriving in the disaster area have braved aftershocks and the risk of further collapses to search for survivors among the rubble. Unfortunately, Mandalay International Airport suffered significant damage and is closed, while the collapse of the control tower at the nearby Nay Pyi Taw International Airport further hampers the transport of rescue supplies. Despite the critical 72-hour window for rescue having passed, efforts continue on-site, and people have not given up hope for survival.
