The Japanese government has released updated projections on the potential impact of a catastrophic "Nankai Trough Megaquake."
According to the latest estimates reported by CCTV News, such an earthquake could result in economic losses exceeding 292 trillion yen, a sharp increase from the 2013 estimate of 220 trillion yen. Moreover, the death toll could reach as high as 298,000.
The Nankai Trough, located along the Pacific coast from Shizuoka Prefecture to southern Kyushu, has a history of triggering massive earthquakes, with the last major event occurring in the mid-1940s.
Experts from the Japan Meteorological Agency and seismic researchers have warned that the risk of a megaquake in the Nankai Trough remains significant. Authorities are closely monitoring and analyzing data to better prepare for such an eventuality.
