Japan has long been a favorite travel destination for Hong Kong residents. However, predictions from multiple Feng Shui experts suggesting the possibility of a major earthquake in Japan this year have raised concerns. Experts have recently pointed to the "Kuril Trench" east of Hokkaido, warning that the unreleased tectonic pressure there could potentially trigger a magnitude-9 earthquake.
As fears of a possible earthquake mount, some travel agencies report a decline in the number of tourists joining Japan tours. According to Ma Sai-man, General Manager of Wing On Travel, there has been a 20% decrease in bookings for Japanese tour groups.
Ma noted that many travelers who initially planned to visit Japan have shifted their focus to alternative destinations such as South Korea, Taiwan, the Mainland, and even more distant locations like the Mediterranean and Europe.
Despite the decline in Japan tour bookings, Ma highlighted that the overall business of the company remains stable. In fact, total bookings across all destinations have increased by approximately 20% over the past one to two weeks.
