In Chiling Village, Lingshui Li Autonomous County, Hainan Province, a 10-year-old boy accidentally fell asleep while fishing for squid and drifted at sea for a day and night before washing up in Sanya. Fortunately, he was rescued by a fishing boat, leading many netizens to jokingly refer to it as a real-life version of "Life of Pi."
On March 22, a video of the boy drifting alone in a small boat went viral online. According to the video uploader, they were fishing at sea when they spotted a small green boat and heard someone shouting. Upon approaching, they discovered it was a young boy, and the fellow anglers worked together to bring him aboard.
Captain Luo Wen from the Yu Tu rescue team stated that they received a rescue request around 5 pm on March 22. The guests had rented their boat to fish and unexpectedly rescued the boy near Niuche Bay in the Haitang District of Sanya. When Luo encountered the boy, his skin was sunburned from prolonged exposure, but after drinking some milk and eating bread, he was in decent condition.
Once rescued, the boy gradually explained his situation. He was 10 years old and had previously gone fishing alone. On the night of March 21, he went squid fishing near Chiling Village but fell asleep on the boat and drifted away, losing his sense of direction. Along the way, he saw a statue of Guanyin and other illuminated spots, attempting to row toward the shore, but strong winds and waves made it impossible to control the boat, causing him to drift aimlessly.
After locating the boy, Luo and the local police quickly sought out his family. A resident from Houhai Village happened to have family in Chiling Village, and through his contact, they were able to reach the boy's parents. An hour later, the parents arrived at the Houhai Police Station to reunite with their son.
Map searches indicate that Houhai Bay in Sanya and Chiling Village are both coastal, with a coastline forming a large bay between them, separated by over 30 kilometers of land. Luo mentioned that on the night of March 21, the sea near Haitang Bay had strong winds of about Force 6 and waves reaching 1.5 meters. "Given such conditions, even adults would struggle, let alone a child; it's truly a stroke of luck."
Liang Qiuming, the Party Secretary of Chiling Village, revealed that the boy is now safely at home, showing no physical or psychological abnormalities. Staff from the Yingzhou Town government and the Chiling Village Committee have visited the family to provide safety education and will arrange for psychological support in the future.
