According to reports from Yonhap News Agency today (March 25), Moon Jae-in's eldest daughter, Moon Da-hye, has been investigated for suspected bribery since last month. The prosecution will focus on examining whether there was any collusion in bribery between her and her father.
The case originated from a whistleblower submission to the Jongno Police Station in Seoul last year, alleging that Moon Da-hye's ex-husband received special treatment during Moon Jae-in's presidency, being appointed as an executive director of Thailand-based budget carrier Thai Eastar Jet in 2018.
Prosecutorial investigations revealed significant doubts regarding the total compensation and housing allowances of 223 million KRW (approximately HK$1.199 million) that the ex-husband received during his tenure.
Currently, the prosecution is advancing the investigation from multiple dimensions: first, confirming whether Moon Da-hye gained illegal benefits through her ex-husband's position; second, determining whether Moon Jae-in was aware of or participated in the exchange of benefits; and third, establishing the legal basis for filing charges against the ex-husband. Regarding the potential expansion of the investigation to include Moon Jae-in's wife, Kim Jung-sook, the prosecution has clearly stated that "there are no relevant plans at this stage."
This investigation comes during a sensitive period in South Korean politics, and Moon Jae-in has yet to make a formal response to the matter.
