Jimmy Lai, founder of Next Digital, along with three related companies, is involved in a conspiracy case related to colluding with foreign forces. After completing the 146th day of hearings, the case has been adjourned until August 14 for an eight-day session of closing arguments from both the prosecution and defense.

In a separate case, Lai was sentenced to 13 months in prison for inciting illegal assembly in Victoria Park in June 2020. He has appealed against his conviction and sentence, with a hearing originally scheduled for November 28 last year that was later canceled. According to the judiciary's website, Lai's application for an extension of his appeal has been scheduled for a hearing on July 18, lasting one day.

In this case, Lai is accused of unlawfully inciting others to knowingly participate in an unauthorized assembly outside the Victoria Park fountain on June 4, 2020. The presiding judge in the original trial noted that Lai is a well-known public figure aligned with the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China. His presence at the park was seen as a clear indication of support for the Alliance, aimed at inciting public participation in the assembly, which had been opposed by the police.

The judge highlighted that Lai had previously stated in an interview that he would attend the assembly, leading to his conviction and subsequent 13-month prison sentence.
