Sun Qingye, deputy head of the Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, attended the Two Sessions in Beijing today (March 7) and addressed the issue of the so-called "pardon" for Jimmy Lai, founder of Next Media. He emphasized that matters should be handled according to the law, questioning, "Why should there be a 'pardon'? What reason is there for a 'pardon'? He (Jimmy Lai) is not the son of any president."
Sun pointed out that the judgments in cases should respect the judges' decisions and that undue pressure should not be placed on them. He stated that the Hong Kong National Security Law has been implemented very well over the past five years.
