
March 16 marks the Foundation Day of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), and this year, the university hosted its largest "Alumni Day" event in recent years. Alumni visited the campus to explore, discover updates from different faculties, and reflect on their experiences at the university.
On March 16, 1910, Sir Frederick Lugard, the then Governor of Hong Kong, laid the cornerstone for the main building of HKU, and the university was officially established in 1911. This date has since become a significant milestone in the institution's history. Over the past century, HKU has remained committed to its educational mission, nurturing countless talents and witnessing the realization of many dreams, inspiring generations of students with the power of knowledge.
The event featured various activities, showcasing the university's commitment to academic excellence and cultural diversity. Alumni had the opportunity to engage in various artistic and community activities, highlighting the vibrant campus life.
Leo, a graduate from the Class of 2022 in the Faculty of Architecture, praised the clarity and density of the event's programming. He noted the effective promotional efforts and the quality design of the guidebook. Discussing HKU's recent developments, he mentioned that the university continues to rank highly in the QS World University Rankings, although he acknowledged the rising competition from Singaporean institutions.
Eason, a graduate of the Class of 2024 in the Department of History, shared that the celebration felt more like a tourist-oriented event, featuring activities such as a stamp collection and souvenir merchandise. He expressed a desire for better crowd management during the longer party events.
As HKU celebrates its 114th anniversary, the university looks forward to continuing its legacy of academic excellence and innovation, while fostering a diverse and inclusive community for future generations.
