The food delivery platform Deliveroo has withdrawn from the Hong Kong market after nine years of operation, during which it once held the top position. However, as competitors entered the market, its business declined. Recently, Deliveroo announced that it would cease all operations by next month on April 7, laying off approximately 200 employees and selling some assets to another delivery platform, foodpanda. Customers are advised to use their gift cards and account balances before the deadline.
Gilly Wong, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council, stated today (March 15) during a radio program that there have been 12 related complaints received, involving amounts totaling around HK$5,000, with the highest single complaint being about HK$600.
Wong noted that although foodpanda has announced that Deliveroo members will receive six months of free membership, some consumers are unwilling to "switch" to foodpanda and prefer refunds for their Deliveroo memberships. Others who already have foodpanda accounts are concerned about missing out on discounts.
She mentioned that after the six-month free membership with foodpanda ends, users will be automatically renewed, and she believes the platform should allow consumers to choose whether to continue their membership.
Wong also urged foodpanda to communicate with Deliveroo users early to alleviate consumer concerns, emphasizing that both delivery platforms should properly handle customers' data.
