The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) has advised that the announcement by the takeaway platform Deliveroo that it would close down its business in Hong Kong may affect the rights of customers and delivery workers in respect of personal data privacy.

The PCPD has commenced a compliance check in accordance with the established procedures to obtain more information relating to the incident and to assist the merchants concerned, including the operator who has taken over the business, to handle, erase or transfer the personal data of their customers and delivery workers in compliance with the The Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (PDPO) to ensure that the personal data of their customers and delivery workers will not be abused, leaked or diverted by illegal persons to be used for fraudulent purposes.
The PCPD appeals to the affected customers and deliverers to approach the merchants or the PCPD for enquiries if they are concerned about the handling of personal data.
