A recent integrity incident occurred at McDonald's, where a customer accidentally left behind a bag containing HK$100,000 in cash. Last Saturday (March 8), a diner had some food at a McDonald's branch in Lai Chi Kok and placed a bag under the table, but forgot to take it when leaving. The bag was then discovered by a cleaning staff member, who promptly handed it over to the manager.
The diner only realized the bag was missing the following Saturday night, and rushed back to the same branch to look for it. Although the store was closed, the staff informed the owner that the bag had been taken to the nearby police station, and ultimately all the cash and belongings were returned. To thank the staff for their honesty, the diner personally delivered a fruit basket to the branch and wrote a thank-you letter to McDonald's Hong Kong, with a copy sent to the U.S. headquarters.
The bag's owner, Amen Wai, posted on the social media platform Threads recounting his experience recovering his belongings. He mentioned that the incident happened last Saturday around 8 PM, when he dined with his son at the McDonald's on Sham Shing Road, Lai Chi Kok. He left the bag under the table but forgot it when he went home. It wasn't until about 11:15 PM the following Sunday that he realized the bag was missing.
He explained that the bag contained a transparent stationery pouch with items including a pen, a hotel rental promotion flyer, a stack of uncashed checks, and around HK$100,000 in cash. "I spent a minute trying to remember the last place I had the bag, which should be at the McDonald's downstairs." He then rushed down to that McDonald's branch to inquire with the staff.
Due to the late hour, Amen Wai found that the McDonald's was already closed when he arrived. However, the staff were still cleaning inside. He explained that he had left the bag the previous night and asked if anyone had found it. The staff immediately asked what was inside the bag, to which he revealed there was a large sum of cash.
The staff said, "We tried to contact you but couldn't find your information. Since there was really a lot of money... we called the police to help keep it safe. You should head to the Cheung Sha Wan Divisional Police Station right away!"
Amen Wai expressed his gratitude to the staff and said, "It took me 3 minutes to run to the Police Station, and in the end, everything was recovered."
The next day, Amen Wai visited the McDonald's with a fruit basket to thank the staff, as well as emailed the Hong Kong and U.S. McDonald's websites to commend the good deeds of the staff at that branch.
"I want more people to know about everything the staff at this branch did for me. Their smiles when they realized they helped me were... so lovely."
Wen Wei Po contacted McDonald's for a statement regarding the incident but received no response yet.
