
A devastating gas explosion at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi in Taichung, Taiwan, last month has claimed its fifth victim. A 2-year-old girl from Macao, who was severely injured in the incident, succumbed to her injuries on March 7 at Macao's Conde S. Januário Hospital.
The Macao Health Bureau confirmed the news in a statement released early on March 13, expressing profound sorrow and extending heartfelt condolences to the girl's family.
The young girl was transported from Taiwan to Macao on a medical charter flight on Feb. 26, accompanied by a professional medical team. Upon arrival, she was immediately admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit of Conde S. Januário Hospital. Despite being kept in stable condition with the help of a ventilator and medication, her condition remained critical.
The explosion took place on Feb. 13 at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store in Taichung. The girl and her family, who were on a trip to Taiwan, were caught in the disaster. Two of her relatives died at the scene, while her parents, uncle, and great-grandmother sustained injuries.
Additionally, two employees of the department store were killed in the tragedy, and over 30 others were injured.
