The gas explosion at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store in Taichung City on Feb. 13 claimed four lives and left 37 injured. Shin Kong Mitsukoshi issued a statement today (Feb. 15) announcing that it will provide NT$11 million (approximately HK$2.619 million) in compensation to the families of each victim as a gesture of condolence and insurance payout, expressing deep care and support for the bereaved during this difficult time.
The department store noted that many employees and counter staff are under significant psychological stress, and the company is fully committed to providing all necessary support, including paid leave, to ensure their work rights are not affected. They have initiated a plan to contact professional counseling organizations, with the first phase taking place over the next two days, where professional psychologists will assist affected employees in managing their emotions. The support program will be expanded in the future to include counter partners and other affected staff.
Regarding the Macao tourists who were injured or lost their lives in the incident, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi stated that they arranged for dedicated personnel and transportation to assist the families upon their arrival at Taoyuan International Airport, ensuring support with transportation, accommodation, and other needs.
Additionally, reports from Macao media indicate that three injured tourists remain hospitalized, with a 2-year-old girl in a coma maintaining a score of 3 on the Glasgow Coma Scale. Hospital officials noted that her condition is stable but requires medication and hypothermia treatment, and they are closely monitoring her. The other two injured individuals are in stable condition and making progress in their recovery.
