
Sixteen people were killed and dozens injured in a tragic bus accident on the R21 highway near OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Tuesday (March 11).
The South African Department of Transport spokesperson confirmed that 12 people were pronounced dead at the scene, while four others succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
The emergency management services of Ekurhuleni, where the bus operator is based, reported that 11 passengers sustained critical injuries, while 24 others suffered minor to moderate injuries.
According to an initial report by the Road Traffic Management Corporation, the crash involved a bus and a private car traveling in the same lane. As the vehicles approached a highway exit, the private car suddenly braked. In an attempt to avoid a collision, the bus driver braked sharply and swerved, causing the vehicle to lose control and overturn.
