MTR is exploring pet-friendly measures, planning to allow passengers to bring pets on the railway, with a decision expected in the next three months. Chair of the Legislative Council's Subcommittee on Matters Relating to Railways, Gary Zhang, stated today (March 12) that discussions on this issue have been ongoing within MTR, and a trial is planned on the light rail with certain restrictions.
Zhang noted that public opinion on pets is polarized, but he believes MTR is finally determined to take this step, partly due to the younger management team. In terms of implementation, a full relaxation of the rules is unlikely; trials are expected to occur during non-peak hours on weekends in designated carriages, with restrictions on the size and types of pets allowed, starting with the most commonly kept pets, such as cats and dogs. Zhang anticipates that if the trial on the light rail receives positive feedback, there will be considerations for a unified trial on the light rail system.
