The SAR government issued licenses for five cab fleets last year, providing a total of more than 3,500 cabs, accounting for about 20% of the total number of cabs in Hong Kong. The Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Mable Chan, said in a radio program today (March 9) that the five new cab fleets have three main features, including being managed by professional administrators, embracing technology, and having professionally trained drivers. She also mentioned that the first fleet will come into service at the end of March.
In terms of fares, Chan revealed that the cab fleet can charge according to the meter or set fares in the form of "chartered taxis". The authorities hope to provide flexibility for the fleet, but at the same time they will monitor the pricing to ensure that it is not too high," Chan said.
Chan said it was important for the cab fleet to keep up with the times and to meet the travel needs of the public. Therefore, the government has asked the fleet to set up a web-based platform, so that passengers can "rate" the drivers, and the administrators will also monitor the performance of the drivers, using technology to install systems in the vehicles to monitor whether the drivers are safe to drive, and whether there are any problems with the service.
