Hong Kong's Transport and Logistics Bureau held a launch ceremony today (March 3) to mark the debut of the city's first organized taxi fleets. Five taxi fleet operators showcased their vehicles at the Transport Department's Vehicle Examination Complex in Tsing Yi ahead of the official rollout.
Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Mable Chan, described the event as a significant milestone for the taxi industry, promoting quality service and smart mobility. The first taxi fleet is expected to begin operations by the end of March, with others to follow shortly.

Chan emphasized that taxis are often visitors' first impression of HK and are integral to daily life for residents. She urged the industry to innovate and adapt to modern expectations. Since the fleet project was introduced last year, it has received stronger-than-expected interest, with the five selected operators accounting for approximately 3,500 vehicles—representing more than one-sixth of the city's 18,000 taxis. Chan expressed hope that these fleets could serve as trailblazers, encouraging more taxi owners and drivers to join.

Of the 3,500 taxis, over 40% (approximately 1,500 vehicles) are brand new, while the remaining 60% are less than three years old. The fleets include 1,900 electric taxis, as well as hybrid and wheelchair-accessible vehicles, supporting green transportation and social inclusion.
Each fleet will implement three key safety measures: GPS tracking, driving record systems, and driver monitoring systems. Additionally, electronic payment options will be available to enhance passenger comfort and convenience.
