Caricature: An accidental 'confession'
Jimmy Lai, founder of Next Digital and a key figure accused of inciting unrest in Hong Kong, faced the 115th day of his national security trial on Jan. 7. Lai and three associated companies of Apple Daily are charged with conspiring to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security.
During the trial, Lai admitted to praying daily during the 2020 US presidential election for Donald Trump's re-election. He also confessed to advocating for US-China decoupling, urging the US to restrict chip exports to China and impose trade curbs. Additionally, Lai admitted to promoting Taiwan's alliance with the US, Australia, Japan, and India under the "Quad Alliance" to counter China. He even blurted out in court that he hopes Taiwan becomes "an independent country."
