A police officer in Tokyo has been arrested for stealing a total of JP¥30 million (approximately HK$1.55 million) in cash from the home of an elderly man who passed away. The 45-year-old officer from the Kamata Police Station, confessed to the crime after initially investigating the death.

The incident occurred on Jan. 31, when the officer and his superior were called to investigate the death of an 80-year-old man in Ota Ward. Upon their arrival, it was clear that the man had already died, and no suspicious circumstances were found. After concluding the investigation, he returned to the scene alone and stole JP¥3 million in cash along with a spare key. On Feb. 4, he returned again and took an additional JP¥27.02 million.

When the police discovered the missing cash, they launched an investigation, which led the officer to voluntarily confess to his superiors on Feb. 23. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police arrested him on March 1 and recovered all the stolen cash. Reports suggest that Kobayashi may have been tempted by the large sum of money he found during the investigation.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police expressed regret over the incident, stating that the officer's actions were unacceptable. They pledged to conduct a thorough investigation and implement strict measures in response.
