A consumer dispute incident has occurred in Taiwan. A tourist reported that they booked a stay at a youth hostel in Taiwan through the booking platform Agoda, but upon arrival, they were refused check-in. The front desk claimed that the bookings were full, leaving the guest to file a complaint with Agoda. Some netizens questioned whether the hostel had overbooked and shifted the responsibility.
According to reports from Taiwan's media TVBS, traveller Mr. Zhang stated that he booked a two-night stay at Starbox Hostel through Agoda. He arrived around 11:30 pm that night, with a Japanese male traveller and a female traveller from Taiwan ahead of him, along with himself and a friend, and another female traveller from Taiwan. In total, four groups of travellers had reservations, but none had a place to stay, nor were there any refunds.
Zhang mentioned that he showed the front desk a screenshot of his booking, but was still denied check-in. "I showed them my order screenshot, and they just ignored it. At least they should acknowledge that there was a management issue on their part; that would be more acceptable to me."
The Starbox Hostel responded that the guest arrived at 11:35 pm and refused to provide a booking number even by the time the front desk closed. Two other groups of customers had also not checked in before midnight. The hostel claimed that due to high booking volume during the World Baseball Classic 2025 qualifying matches, they could not accommodate on-site guests or process check-ins and had reported the matter to the authorities for legal proceedings. The hostel emphasized that there was no overbooking situation, and consumers seeking refunds should contact booking agent Agoda. As of now, Agoda has not responded.
Experts have analysed that if Agoda had overbooked, they must comply with local regulations. The local tourism department stated that travellers could file consumer complaints. It remains to be investigated whether the issue lies with the youth hostel operator or Agoda's overbooking.
