As the first batch of visas under the "Top Talent Pass Scheme" (TTPS) began expiring since late December last year, public attention has turned to the renewal process. The Immigration Department (ImmD) has clarified that when handling renewal applications, it considers factors such as the applicant's salary and benefits, their economic contributions to Hong Kong, and the amount of time they have spent in the city.
The ImmD further explained that, upon approval, applicants are typically granted an extension of no more than three years or until the expiration date of their employment contract in HK. For individuals who have established businesses in HK, the length of the extension depends on various factors. In some cases, shorter extensions may be granted to allow monitoring of the business's performance.
Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun shared on social media on Monday (March 3) that between late 2022 and the end of January 2025, HK received over 440,000 applications under various talent admission schemes, with more than 280,000 applications approved. Of these, one-third were under the TTPS.
He also noted that as of the end of January, only around 300 individuals had reached the stage of applying for visa renewals. Initial observations indicate that those successfully renewing their visas have performed well in HK's job market, with the majority employed in finance, commerce, and innovation and technology sectors.
