The discovery of the first dinosaur fossil in Hong Kong has become the hottest topic in the city. The Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre has set up a "Dinosaur Parlour", where visitors can watch the experts and staff working on the fossil from a close distance.

Secretary for Development Bernadette Linn Hon-ho said on her blog that the "Dinosaur Parlour" has attracted more than 40,000 visitors in two months.
The Chief Heritage Executive of Antiquities and Monuments Office, Siu Lai-kuen, introduced that the first discovery of dinosaur fossils in Hong Kong was made at Chek Chau, which is within the boundary of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark in the northeastern waters of the New Territories.

Experts from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have preliminarily identified the fossil as a large, aged dinosaur from the Cretaceous period.
The "Dinosaur Parlour" takes visitors back in time to the Cretaceous period, about 145 to 66 million years ago, when dinosaurs flourished.
Siu Lai-kuen introduced that the temperature, humidity and brightness of the lighting in the parlor are all subject to specific requirements. "A restoration area has also been set up in the parlor to allow members of the public to watch experts and staff from theInstitute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences restoring the dinosaur fossils at a close distance, which is the first time that such an opportunity has been provided in Hong Kong."

Siu added that the public can not only explore the fossils of the Chek Lap Kok dinosaur, but also learn about Hong Kong's palaeontological fossils, such as the Ostracoda of aquatic animals and Ammonoidea, as well as fossils of plants that belong to the same period as the dinosaurs.

The "Dinosaur Parlour" offers group guided tours by appointment and free public guided tours on weekends and public holidays, as well as beautiful derivative products and interesting workshops.
