Michelle Trachtenberg, the American actress known for her roles in Gossip Girl and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was found dead in her Manhattan apartment on Feb. 26, local time. She was 39 years old.
The New York Police Department has preliminarily ruled her death as due to natural causes, though further details will be confirmed following a medical examiner's autopsy.
According to police reports, Trachtenberg's mother discovered her unresponsive in her apartment at around 8 a.m. and called emergency services. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. Investigators found no evidence of foul play, but post-liver transplant medication was scattered near her bedside. Reports also noted her frail condition at the time of death.
Sources revealed that Trachtenberg underwent a liver transplant late last year, with her health reportedly deteriorating from complications after the procedure. In 2023, she had been secretly hospitalized for liver cirrhosis, and after her 2024 surgery, her weight dropped by 20 kilograms. She was last publicly seen needing assistance to walk.
Trachtenberg began her acting career at the age of three and gained early recognition at 11 with her breakout role in Harriet the Spy. At 14, she solidified her status in the industry by portraying Dawn, the sister of the titular character in the iconic series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As an adult, she became widely known for her role as Georgina Sparks in Gossip Girl, a cunning and rebellious character that left a lasting impression on fans.
