Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Wednesday (Feb. 26) that top security officials will be heading to Washington to meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to finalize a bilateral security coordination agreement.
"The security cabinet is leaving today. They will meet tomorrow in Washington with Secretary of State Marco Rubio," Sheinbaum stated during her daily press briefing.
The delegation will consist of Mexico's security minister, defense minister, navy minister, foreign minister, and attorney general.
This agreement is critical as a 25 percent US tariff on Mexican goods is scheduled to take effect on March 4 unless a new deal is reached with US President Donald Trump. Since his campaign, Trump has threatened to impose tariffs unless Mexico takes stronger action to combat fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration.
Sheinbaum characterized the upcoming meeting as part of ongoing discussions to establish a security framework that respects the sovereignty of both nations. Mexico is advocating for a permanent suspension of tariffs while also urging the US to intensify efforts to combat arms trafficking, which contributes to organized crime.
