US President Donald Trump announced during a governors' meeting that Apple CEO Tim Cook had promised to relocate manufacturing operations from Mexico to the US.
Trump stated that Cook would close two factories in Mexico and move production to the US, while also committing to invest "billions of dollars" in the country. According to Trump, Apple is making these changes to avoid being impacted by tariffs.
Details regarding the specific factories mentioned by Trump remain unclear. Bloomberg reported that Foxconn, the manufacturer responsible for producing iPhones, currently operates facilities in Mexico and has also announced plans to expand its business there. Apple has not responded to Bloomberg's request for comment.
Following his meeting with Trump, Cook described their discussion as productive. Notably, Cook attended Trump's presidential inauguration last month and previously visited his Mar-a-Lago estate before Trump's term began.
During Trump's first term as president, Cook leveraged their positive relationship to secure tariff exemptions for iPhones. However, Trump indicated that such exemptions might not be as easily granted this time, as he pushes for comprehensive tariffs.
