South Korea's Constitutional Court held the 11th and final hearing in S. Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment trial on Tuesday (Feb. 25), with Yoon present to deliver his closing statement.
The hearing commenced around 2:00 pm local time and involved the examination of evidence presented by Yoon's legal team and the National Assembly, which is acting as the prosecution. Both sides provided their final arguments during the session.
Yoon arrived at the court around 9:00 pm local time to make his final statement. In his address, he expressed his apologies and gratitude to the South Korean people for their support, particularly regarding his imposition of martial law. Yoon had declared an emergency martial law on Dec. 3 of last year, a decision that was revoked by the opposition-led parliament just hours later.
The impeachment motion against Yoon was passed by the National Assembly on Dec. 14 and subsequently delivered to the Constitutional Court for deliberation, a process that can take up to 180 days, during which Yoon's presidency is suspended.
